The new study, by researchers at the University of Southern California, is the first to reveal that a medication can have a similar impact on men suffering from ED. A new study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, the results of which were presented to the U. S. Food and Drug Administration, were presented during a public hearing on Tuesday, February 6, 2015.
Researchers found that those who were taking sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, had significantly lower rates of impotence symptoms than the placebo group.
“These results have implications for the development of a treatment for ED,” said Dr. David E. M. Johnson, M. D., director of the Sexual Medicine and Reproductive Health Center at UC San Francisco. “It’s important to understand the effects of sildenafil on erectile function, so we can use that information to help determine if Viagra is the right treatment for this patient group.”
Viagra, sold as the little blue pill in the United States, is the most prescribed drug in the world, the study found.
The research involved 1,200 men ages 18 to 41 who were taking Viagra. All were healthy volunteers. They reported no adverse effects and were taking no nitrates or medications to treat angina.
Viagra was initially prescribed to be taken every 4 hours over an eight-hour interval, according to the researchers.
About four hours later, they began to notice an increase in the frequency of erections. This was followed by a decrease in the number of erections.
“Viagra was a great treatment option for this patient population and may have been the cause of the erectile disfunction,” said the study’s co-authors. “It is also important to recognize that sildenafil does not affect sexual desire, and therefore does not cause erections in men. Viagra has not been shown to improve erectile function in the clinical setting, which is why this study will be important to confirm these findings.”
The study found that patients taking Viagra had a similar response to sildenafil. Viagra users also had fewer erections than the placebo group. However, the researchers did not find any significant differences in the number of erections between the two groups.
The researchers noted that their study was conducted in men between the ages of 18 and 41 and did not have data on the impact of the drug on sexual desire. They also did not find significant differences in the number of erections between the two groups.
According to Johnson and his team, “Viagra has been shown to improve sexual desire and erectile function in men with erectile dysfunction.”
Johnson said he was not involved in the study.
“I am not a scientist and the findings are not true,” he said. “The results of this study are not yet available to the public.”
Johnson is an American registered nurse, medical student and clinical professor of urology at the UC San Francisco Medical School.
In a statement, the study was published in theJournal of Sexual Medicine, which was founded in 2003.
The study was supported by the National Institutes of Health and the Men’s Health Initiative, which was the largest U. study of men’s health in history.
